Short introduction
Look at the difference between these 4 phrases:
1. Il est plus grand que moi: He is taller than me. – No change – Masculine singular. |
2. Elle est plus grande que moi: She is taller than me. – We add an “e” – Feminine singular. |
3. Ils sont plus grands que moi: They are taller than me. – We add an “s” – Plural masculine. |
4. Elles sont plus grandes que moi: They are taller than me. – Here we need to add an “e” and “s” – Plural feminine. |

Examples – Adjectives
More than – Plus que
- Il est plus petit que nous: He is shorter than us.
- Elle est plus petite que lui: She is shorter than him.
- Nous sommes plus forts qu’eux: We are stronger than them.
- Elle est plus grande que lui: She is taller than him.
- Vous êtes plus intelligents que nous: You are more intelligent than us.
Less than – Moins que
- Il est moins attentif que nous: He is less attentive than us.
- Nous sommes moins intelligents qu’eux: We are less intelligent than them.
- Ils sont moins créatifs qu’elle: They are less creative than her.
- Elles sont moins créatives que nous: They are less creative than us.
As (as) – Aussi que
- Vous êtes aussi généreux qu’eux: You are as generous as them.
- Tu es aussi doué que lui: You are as gifted as him.
- Ces élèves sont aussi efficaces que les autres: These students are as efficient as the others.
Better – Meilleur (e)(s)
Please pay attention to the extra “e” and “s” in relation to the number and gender.
- Ce vélo est meilleur que le mien: This bicycle is better than mine.
- Ma voiture est meilleure que la tienne: My car is better than yours.
- Mes sites web sont meilleurs que ceux de mon frère: My websites are better than the ones of my brother.
- Ces robes sont meilleures que les nôtres: These dresses are better than ours.
Worse – Pire (s)
Please pay attention to the extra “s” for “ils”.
- Il est pire que moi – He is worse than me.
- Elle pire que lui – She is worse than him.
- Ils sont pires que nous – They are worse than us.
We can use “plus mauvais” and “plus mauvaise” instead of “pire”:
- Il est plus mauvais que vous – He is worse than you.
- Elle est plus mauvaise que vous – She is worse than you.
Verbs
”Plus que” and “moins que” will stay the same:
- Il chante plus que toi: He sings more than you.
- Elle écrit plus que nous: She writes more than us.
- Nous dansons moins que lui: We dance less than him.
- Je danse moins qu’elles: I dance less than them.
We will use ”autant que” instead of ”aussi que”:
- Elle parle autant que lui: She talks as much as he does.
- Elle crie autant qu’eux: She screams as much as they do.
We also have to introduce ”mieux”, which means ”better”:
- On nage mieux que lui: We swim better than him.
- Elle joue mieux que nous: She plays better than us.
- Je chante mieux qu’elle: I sing better than her.
- Il nettoie mieux qu’eux: He cleans better than them.
We can also use ”Meilleur” to say that something is “Better”, but not in the examples above. I will write a different article on this topic.
Now let’s look at ”Worse”. We can reuse ”pire”. We can also use ”Plus mal”.
- Il joue pire qu’eux: He plays worse than them.
- Elle joue plus mal que nous: She plays worse than them.
- Ils jouent pires que moi: They play worse than them.
- Je joue plus mal qu’elles: I play worse than them.
