Every part includes audio files and conjugation in the plural form.
Note: I have also written an article on negative personality traits and the conjugation of adjectives.
Part 1
I will go through the grammar behind these adjectives in this chapter.
If you’re already familiar with this process you can go to part 2.
You can see the masculine- and feminine version in the picture, but what do we need to add in order to create the plural form?
- Ils sont attentionés: They are thoughtful.
- Elles sont attentionées: They are thoughtful.
So, we’ll add an s to create the plural form. The pronunciation will not change. The pronunciation in the singular form is also the same for both versions.
- Ils sont généreux: They are generous.
- Elles sont généreuses: They are generous.
The pronunciation for these adjectives is not the same in the singular form. In addition, généreux will not change in the plural form.
We’ll add an s to the feminine form, généreuses. However, the extra s is silent.
Let’s continue with 2 adjectives that follow the same pattern as the previous ones:
- Ils sont courageux: They are brave.
- Elles sont courageuses: They are brave.
I have a highlighted the difference for the feminine version with an s.
- Ils sont enjoués: They are playful.
- Elles sont enjouées: They are playful.
We add an s to both versions. The pronunciation is the same for both adjectives in the singular form, and it does not change in the plural form.
- Il sont charmants: They are charming.
- Elles sont charmantes: They are charming.
These 2 follow the same pattern as the previous ones.
Let’s finish this chapter with an important adjective:
- Ils sont gentils: They are nice/kind.
- Elles sont gentilles: They are nice/kind.
The pronunciation is the same for both versions. However, please remember that the feminine version is spelled with 2 L.
We add an s to both versions in the plural form.
Part 2
Let’s start with another important trait, just like gentil, we also want to be intelligent:
- Ils sont intelligents: They are intelligent.
- Elles sont intelligentes: They are intelligent.
We’ll add an s to create the plural form. We’ll not pronounce the s. However, there is a difference in pronunciation when it comes to the singular form.
You can listen to the audio file to learn the difference.
Let’s continue with compatissant, that follows the same pattern:
- Ils sont compatissants: The are compassionate.
- Elles sont compatissantes: They are compassionate.
Let’s continue with an adjective, where the masculine version ends with an x:
- Ils sont joyeux: They are cheerful.
- Elles sont joyeuses: They are cheerful.
Do you remember the rules? For the masculine version we don’t have to add anything in the plural form. However, we need to add an s in the feminine version.
- Ils sont méticuleux: They are meticulous.
- Elles sont méticuleuses: They are meticulous.
These adjectives follow the same pattern as the previous ones. Let’s continue with two others that also follow the same pattern:
- Ils sont ambitieux: They are ambitious.
- Elles sont ambitieuses: They are ambitious.
Let’s finished this chapter with an adjective, where we only add an s to both versions in order to create the plural form:
- Il sont organisés: They are organized.
- Elles sont organisées: They are organized.
Being organized is something that we should strive for, at least in some part of our lives. For some reason it tends to be more difficult than it should be :-).
Part 3
Let’s begin with another important trait:
- Ils sont sympas: They are nice.
- Elles sont sympas: They are nice.
These adjectives are pronounced in the same way, both in the singular- and the plural form.
- Ils sont forts: They are strong.
- Elles sont fortes: They are strong.
We’ll add an s to express the plural form. I also want to highlight the difference in pronunciation. The T and the S are silent in the masculine form. In the feminine form, we’ll pronounce the T.
Let’s move on with an adjective, where the masculine version ends in x:
- Ils sont loyaux: They are loyal.
- Elles sont loyales: They are loyal.
In the masculine version, we need to remove the l in the end, and replace it with UX. This is important to keep in mind, as it would be tempting to add an s.
Let’s look at an adjective that is pronounced the same way, both in the singular and plural form:
- Ils sont charismatiques: They are charismatic.
- Elles sont charismatiques: They are charismatic.
We only need to add an s to create the plural form. It should be this easy all the time, right? 🙂
It does not matter if it’s easy or not for the person who has this trait:
- Elles sont tenaces: They are persistent.
- Ils sont tenaces: They are persistent.
Last but not least, how do you say hardworking in French? It’s a trait that we probably wish we had more of:
- Ils sont travailleurs: They are hardworking.
- Elles sont travailleuses: They are hardworking.
We add an s to both versions in the plural form. There is a difference in pronunciation, which you are probably aware of by now :-). If not, please listen to the audio file.
Additional traits
Being funny is another trait that we want to have in our toolbox. There are different adjectives that we can use to describe someone or ourselves as funny.
Let’s stick to a very common adjective that serves our purpose well:
- Il est drôle(s): He is funny.
- Elle est drôle(s): She is funny.
They are pronounced in the same way, both in the singular- and plural form. The S in the brackets represents the extra letter we need to add to create the plural form.
You are probably already familiar with the process by now :-).
Here is another adjective that follows the same pattern:
- Il est serviable(s): He is helpful.
- Elle est serviable(s): She is helpful.
Being helpful is probably more important than being funny, at least in the long run.
It can also be a good thing to be creative:
- Il est créatif(s): He is creative.
- Elle est créative(s): She is creative.
These 2 are pronounced differently.
Let’s finish part 4 by adding sociable, which means sociable in English :-):
- Il est sociable(s): He is sociable.
- Elle est sociable(s): She is sociable.
Introvert or extrovert?
Both these traits can be negative as well as positive. It depends on the person you’re asking :-).
These 2 adjectives translate well into English:
- Il est introverti(s): He is introverted.
- Elle est introvertie(s): She is introverted.
And like before, the S in the brackets represents the plural form.
- Il est extrovert(s): He is extroverted.
- Elle est extrovertie(s): She is extroverted.
Both introverti and extroverti should be easy to remember for a native English speaker.
